Miniature Stories through Push Notification

If you have a mobile phone, then you probably can relate to that feeling of irritation when your phone gets clogged up with useless and unwanted push notifications. How about if you get a push notification that contains a short story instead?

Starting on Monday, a new type of message will be sent by Serial Box, a publishing company and mobile app that produces and delivers team-written serialized fictions.

Introducing the Microfiction Mondays

Serial Box will be launching a new feature on July 9, which they are calling “Microfiction Mondays”, according to their blog post announcement.

Serial Box is currently publishing short fictions that are composed more like a season of a television series rather than a traditional novel, and a new “episode” of these stories come out every week. As for the Microfiction stories, it will be even shorter than that.

In order to fit on your phone’s push notifications, the Microfiction stories are limited to 150 characters or less. It also seems that Serial Box is aiming for quality rather than quantity since they will be using their existing authors, who are writing their already published series, to write the super short fiction.

More about Microfiction Mondays

Unlike other mobile applications, Serial Box doesn’t encourage their users to open the app for these Microfiction stories because it shows a flash fiction story that anyone can read without ever unlocking their phone.

In this new feature, Microfiction Mondays, users will receive a push notification containing a flash fiction story that is limited to 150 characters or less. The stories won’t be available anywhere else on the app or on the website. So, the only way to read them is to download the application and enable push notifications.

Here are some of the sample stories released by Serial Box:

Serial Box

“The ghosts don’t like that the living outnumbered them. They tell me they’re going to do something about it soon. They won’t say what.”

“Yes, he’s dead.” She smiled at me. “How do you like the cake? I made it especially for you.” Thunderstruck, I stared down at the crumbs on my plate.

Serial Box’s Hopes for this New Feature

In one of their blog posts, the company wrote, “[This is] the perfect bite-sized story for a busy afternoon filled with meetings. We hope that these stories will provide a moment of fictional solace for our Serial Boxers.”

Serial Box is looking to appeal to those on-the-go mobile users who don’t have enough time to open their phones and maybe also entice them into reading one of the longer series. Again, since these stories have fewer than 150 characters each, anyone can surely find the time to read them.

At this time, there’s no telling yet if Microfiction will be a hit or if it will be just another thing clogging up your notification screen. But looking at the bright side, the use of a limited number of characters worked out pretty well for another company once before, so who knows?

Andy Rubin, the man who made Android, has recently revealed his latest creation – the Essential Phone PH-1. All eyes are now on Rubin’s latest startup as he’s one of the founders of the Android OS before it was purchased by Google. Now, the operating system he created is being used by two billion users spread across the globe.

This new smartphone will cost around $699. It features a Qualcomm 835 processor, 128GB of storage and 4GB of RAM. It also works with accessories that can be attached with magnetic connectors, which allows you to customize your phone. However, there are only two accessories announced until now: the smallest ever created a 360-degree camera and the wireless charging dock.

Camera Features

The phone will be released in the United States at the beginning. What makes the phone so attractive is its simplistic design. PH-1 features a 5.71-inch full display with a 2560 x 1312 QHD resolution and brightness of 500 units. The display covers the whole phone, and it has rounded corners, which enhances the screen aesthetically by making it look even bigger. The back of the phone is geared with a 13MP dual camera, whereas the front camera is 8MP. What’s more, both cameras can shoot 4K videos!

The 3040 mAh battery of the phone is charged either by a cordless dock or a USB cable. Essential Phone is built with a titanium frame, ceramic back, and gorilla glass. The titanium makes the phone completely scratch resistant and bend-proof, which means that it will endure more than other flagship phones such as the iPhone 7 and Galaxy S8.

The company hasn’t made any claims about the phone’s durability, but from what we see, you might not have to cover the device with a protective case.

Currently, it is available in black and white colors, but more are expected to be released in the upcoming months. If you wish to have the 360-degree camera accessory, then you will need to pay additional $50.

Blackberry hyped their fans before revealing their latest flagship phone – the KeyOne. Currently, the best model of the brand, which offers a brilliant design, touchscreen, physical keyboard and flawless Android OS. However, it’s still not as good as its competitors – the Samsung Galaxy S8, iPhone 7 & Google Pixel.

We really hope that this article is going to help with your decision on choosing whether this is the right phone for you.

Phone’s thickness

Do you want your phone to be thin and light? Then, don’t go for KeyOne as it isn’t. The smartphone has a thick aluminum body with rounded bottom corners.

Small Keyboard

Small Keyboard

It’s 2017, and there are still smartphones with keyboards, which is a brave move. Keyboards are quite useful, especially for individuals who write a lot on their phones. However, this one is kinda small for people with bigger fingers.

Landscape mode’s keyboard is bad

Landscape mode’s keyboard is bad

The design of the phone here is a big issue. When you are in a landscape mode, you will start hating the phone because it’s too big and you can’t reach everywhere when writing. It’s not only uncomfortable, but it will make you write significantly slow.

The convenience key

Blackberry KeyOne has a Convenience button placed on the right side of the phone. It’s a useful button that serves as a shortcut. The problem comes with the placement of the key, as they are constantly clicking it by mistake.

Power Button Placement

Power Button Placement

The power button is the next poorly placed key as it can be found on the upper left side of the phone. Most phones put the buttons on the right side so that they can be easily clicked when needed.

Camera needs improvementCamera

KeyOne has a 12-megapixel camera implemented, which isn’t as sophisticated as the iPhone 7’s or Google’s Pixel. The other two flagships enhance the dynamic range, improve the light and improve the photo using image stabilization.

Even though that the front camera is 8 megapixels, it still can’t beat its competitors. The camera shouldn’t be much of an issue as it really makes great photos.

We hope that these six points have helped you in the decision-making process. The device has its pros and cons, and it is an inexpensive alternative to the others major brands.

The new Samsung S8 and S8+ are here, but are they good enough to forget the catastrophic Note 7? After a pre-order period that finished two days ago, the company’s new flagship phones are now available in the United States, South Korea, Puerto Rico and Canada. The phone is expected to debut in other markets in the upcoming weeks.

First of all, there’s no difference between the S8 and S8+, except the fact that you will receive more pixels per inch on the smaller model. They are both equipped with a Gorilla Glass on the front, while the back has a fingerprint magnet. Similar to the iPhone 7+, the Samsung models have a small difference in battery capacity, but it’s not much.

Apart from Apple, the specifications of the new Samsung phones are the same, so your choice depends on the size you prefer.

The 6.3-inch Galaxy S8+ might sound a bit too large for you, but the design is very comfortable, and it’s quite easy to hold the device. The device is narrower than its Apple competitor, and you don’t have to stretch your finger to the top. However, the S8+ is all screen, and the resolution is incredible, which makes everything you do crystal clear.

The device features a Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2,960 x 1,440, a pixel density of 529 PPI on the S8+ and 570 on the regular model. For comparison, the iPhone 7 Plus has a 401 PPI high-definition display.

Goodbye physical button

Goodbye physical button
This is the first Samsung model that has no physical button, but it has a virtual home and back button. At the bottom of the screen, there is a pressure sensor. When you press harder, you are returned to the home screen. However, this is all limited to the home button, unlike the iPhones which offer a full-screen 3D Touch.
Unlocking the phone can be a troublesome process as it takes a few steps to do it. If you want to use the fingerprint reader, you need two steps. But if you use a PIN, then you have to press home, swipe up, enter the code and then unlock the phone. The process is two-step with iris scanning as well.

At the bottom of the phone’s body, you will find the Bixby button and the mono speaker. The volume rocker is located on the left edge, while the right edge is preserved for the sleep button. Unlike Apple, Samsung isn’t ready to ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack.

It’s water and dust resistant, but you have to wait up to twenty minutes to dry if you wish to use the USB-C port. The device can withstand up to 1.5 meters of fresh water for around thirty minutes.

Both devices are equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 CPU and 4GB of RAM, delivering impressive results. The models come with a 64GB of storage, which can be expanded with a micro SD storage to 256GB.

We firmly believe that Samsung has put way too many biometric security options – iris scanning, fingerprint and face recognition. If the light isn’t good, then the facial recognition won’t do the trick. Moreover, it can’t be used for Samsung Pay as well.

To unlock the phone with your finger, you have to tap the button on the back while watching the screen and it’s a bit uncomfortable. Plus, it’s the sensor is located right next to the 12MP camera and I often press it instead of the sensors.

The company has decided to stick with the 12MP camera of the S7. The photos are quite good, but the photos get oversaturated, which changes the colors considerably.

The front facing camera is significantly improved, and it is now 8 MP, which makes it perfect for selfies. By the way, the Galaxy S8 allows you to apply animated stickers and filters on your face if you are not willing to open Snapchat, Facebook or Instagram Stories for the purpose.

Samsung offers amazing gesture-based controls such as turning the volume up & down, changing the brightness, swiping up and down and switching between the two cameras.

Wireless Charging & Battery Life

Wireless Charging & Battery Life
Both flagship models offer a fast wireless charging, whereas you only have to leave the phone on the pad to charge. It charges the phone to a full capacity in less than two hours.

The S8 is equipped with a 3,000 mAh battery, while the S8+ offers a 3,500 mAh battery.

All in all, the new Samsung is an amazing phone with many functionalities. The screen is truly amazing, and the lack of a physical button should not be a problem. For an Android device, the Galaxy S8 is the best one on the market, and the terrible sensor placement for the fingerprint isn’t much of a problem.

Last year wasn’t one of the best for the Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi, which was considered as one of the next tech giants. Not only that their VP of Global Efforts resigned from his positions, but the market share shrunk a lot as well.

What makes the company a preferred choice for users is that they know how to build a phone from high quality. What’s more, those smartphones provide incredible specifications at highly competitive prices!

Their latest flagship device, the Xiaomi Mi 6, is a phone that delivers outstanding specifications similar to the Galaxy S8, for a much lower price. It was revealed at the Beijing event this Wednesday, and it features highly advanced components that provide high performance. This includes the latest Snapdragon 835 processor, 64GB storage, 6GB RAM, dual stereo speakers, 3,350 mAh battery, 12 MP dual camera and resistance to water.

The camera is considered as an innovative component as it combines wide-angle lens with a telephoto lens that provides a 2x optical zoom. This is a feature that can be found in the latest Plus version of the iPhone.

When you keep in mind the specs and the price of the phone, it turns out to be a better option than the popular Samsung. Stay updated as we get our hands on the device and write a detailed review about it.

I do believe that the design isn’t as good as Samsung’s, but it isn’t something that would worry me at all. On the upper side of the screen and the bottom, you can find two bezels. It’s elegant, but not as classy as the Samsung or LG.

The phone has some fantastic features as the 2×2 dual Wi-Fi, which considerably improves connectivity and speed. During the nights, you can enjoy the “ultra-dark” mode to preserve your eyes.

When it comes to value for the price given, Xiaomi beats its competition. You can buy the device for only $363, which is half of what you have to pay for other brands. When you compare it to others, the Samsung Galaxy S8 costs around $730, while the Huawei P10 can be found for around $696-700. You can see the difference for yourself!
