Most of you have probably had your blood pressure taken before. I guess for me it’s a pleasant enough experience, and I think that some people may take for granted its importance and usefulness.

Michigan State University has designed a tested-and-proven app that can provide accurate blood pressure readings by using an iPhone, even without special equipment to support it.

Accurate Blood Pressure Readings

Importance of Taking Blood Pressure

Before we delve deeper into that, there is just one question that needs to be answered: “Are you aware of the importance of taking accurate blood pressure readings?”

Blood pressure is an important element of a person’s health. A high blood pressure reading represents a high risk of a person having health implications in the future because it can put a strain on that person’s arteries.

Now, let’s talk about the importance of accurate blood pressure readings. It is considered critical because if the reading isn’t accurate, then it could potentially lead doctors to undertake the wrong action plan.

For instance, if you have a misleadingly high reading, then it will in all likelihood make the doctor prescribe medication that’s not only unnecessary but possibly harmful as well. On the other hand, if you have a misleadingly low reading, then it will certainly lead to you not receiving the proper care and medication that you truly need.

A Mobile App That Can Take Blood Pressure

The discovery of the app, which was highlighted in the recent issue of Scientific Reports, was made by a group of scientists led by Ramakrishna Mukkamala, who is an MSU professor of electrical and computer engineering.

According to Mukkamala, they were able to invent a practical tool to monitor blood pressure by leveraging optical and force sensors that are present in smartphones for taking selfies and making use of “peek and pop”, which is a feature that is exclusive to the iPhone and is first introduced in the launching of iPhone 6s and 6s Plus.

By making use of a combination of a smartphone and additional optical and force sensors, the group was able to create a device that rivaled arm-cuff readings, which is the standard in nearly every medical setting.

At present, with smartphones continually evolving and improving, those add-ons may no longer be required. Also, since peek and pop is already available in many iPhone and some Android models, people can have the option of using a smartphone other than the iPhone is taking a reading.

Availability of the Mobile App

According to Mukkamala, the app could be made available to the public perhaps in the last quarter of 2019; that is if things keep progressing at its current pace.

Like their original device, a standard regulatory test still needs to be done on the application. However, since no additional hardware is required, then the app could possibly reach the public faster.

In an international setting, the app could be ground-breaking, a game-changer even. Not only will this app provide people with accurate readings but also with a daily record that could give an accurate average.

At present, there are a number of existing, as well as up-and-coming, consumer electronics companies that are launching brand new smartphones every now and then. Among these several smartphones being sold in the market today, which are considered to be performing best? Let’s find out.

Smartphones today come at all shapes, sizes, and prices. Below you will find some of the first-rate phones that you could buy today.

What to Consider When Choosing a Phone

If you’re going to choose a phone, there are six things that you should always put into consideration: build quality, design, features, performance, user-friendliness, and value.

Generally speaking, a great phone should be sturdy and have a simple yet functional design. It should also offer multiple features, perform really well, and easy to operate. Most importantly, it should be something that brings value to your money. Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it must be cheap, but it should be worth every penny that you spend on it. It shouldn’t leave you feeling like you’re better off with a much cheaper phone.

Choosing the best phone differs from person to person because we all have different opinions and preferences, so it’s best if you figure out first what you want out of a smartphone. From there, you can easily weed out the long list of smartphones that are presently being offered in the market and find the best phone for you.

Which is Better, Android or iOS?

The truth is there are several mobile phone operating systems, but these two are the only ones worth talking about since they are both widely known compared to other mobile phone operating systems.

Among the numerous phones being sold in the market, the majority of them utilize Android OS, the latest version of which is the Android Pie. Conversely, even if the iOS platform has a significantly lower market share than Android, many developers practically release their apps on iOS most of the time; therefore, it has the best app store you’ll find anywhere. If you wish to try as many games as you want, then you’d definitely consider getting an iPhone, for its iOS.

Best Smartphones in 2018
  • OnePlus 6

Not considering its lack of wireless charging and waterproofing, the OnePlus 6 is one of the finest phones you could buy today. Not only is it fairly priced, but it also has great specs that other mobile devices could only hope to have while having the same tag price. Additionally, it also has a nice design and an excellent camera that could rival other high-end phones on the market.

The OnePlus 6 has a glass design, with an amazing display and notably quick performance. Considering the price gap with other high-end phones, OnePlus 6 is a gem to have.

  • Samsung Galaxy S9

The Galaxy S9 is another great phone to have right now, even if it cost considerably higher than most phones in its generation. Aside from having everything that a modern phone is supposed to have, it also allows users to charge wirelessly and also includes a headphone jack, not to mention that it is fully water-proof.

The Galaxy S9 also happens to have an excellent design with a massive screen, minus the top-notch at the top of the screen as some mobile phones apparently have. It might appear a lot like the Galaxy S8, but it boasts an improved camera and dual speakers.

  • Huawei P20 Pro

The P20 Pro finds its way into this list because of its three amazing rear cameras. Compared to other smartphones in the market, the P20 Pro stands out because of its camera system. It lets you shoot great photos even under low light conditions.

The device is designed with a combination of glass and metal, which makes it look more stylish than the previous P10 phones. It is even available in a Twilight color scheme, which is incredibly exquisite. It still lacks wireless charging and a headphone jack, but it doesn’t really matter because it has the best low light camera on any smartphone.

  • Samsung Galaxy Note 9

Compared to its predecessor, the Note 8, the Note 9 has taken the design of the previous version and enhanced it further by having better build quality as well as a larger screen and a well-placed fingerprint scanner. In addition, Note 9 also boasts a sizeable 4,000mAh battery.

Moreover, the Note 9 also has the best display, stereo speakers, and camera on any smartphone you will find in the market, not to mention that it also has the smoothest Samsung software so far.

  • Apple iPhone X

iPhone X is the most expensive smartphone on our list. However, if you’re looking for a great display, great camera, great build quality, and sophisticated features like Face ID unlock system, then this is the phone for you.

At £999 or $999, the iPhone X is indeed expensive. Still, you should remember that quality comes with a price. With the iPhone X, not only will you get OLED display, but you also have great dual cameras, wireless charging, improved battery life, and excellent security feature.

Walking downtown I could hardly turn every corner without seeing someone holding a Smartphones. With the way technology is developing faster and consistently, Smartphones nowadays are more common than the cold and flu. And there are a lot of Smartphones in the market today so it is difficult to pick the best one to buy. Of course, among all of these Smartphones being marketed today, the best Smartphones are those with the established brand name – such as Samsung, Sony, ASUS, iPhone, et cetera.

Before you make a choice on which Smartphones to buy, let me just remind you that expensive doesn’t always mean the best. You could actually get good quality phones without spending a lot. We have a lot of budget Smartphones in the market and you don’t even know about them. So, let me take this opportunity to share my top 5 budget Smartphones for 2018. Here they are in no particular order:

  1. ASUS ZenFone Max M1

ASUS ZenFone Max M1 makes it to my top 5 list of budget Smartphones because it is highly affordable (currently priced at Php 8,995) and it has a big-battery (4,000 mAh) handset. Additionally, it also has dual cameras and a fingerprint sensor – two features you wouldn’t usually find in a budget phone.

The new ZenFone Max is also equipped with a Snapdragon 430 chipset that’s both fast enough for everyday tasks and highly efficient at optimizing every ounce of energy from the battery. There is even a facial recognition using the front camera to unlock it. So, large battery, efficient processor, reasonably low price, all the features you need – do you need anything more?

  1. OPPO A83

If you’re the type to obsess over a Smartphone with a near-borderless display, you definitely wouldn’t go wrong with OPPO 83. It is not just OPPO’s best budget Smartphones (priced at Php 9,990); it is also one of the cheapest Smartphones you can find anywhere. Although it’s most remarkable feature is an 8-megapixel front camera with artificial intelligence built in for smoother selfies.

Usually, budget phones get low-powered processors, but that is not true for OPPO A83. Even though screen resolution and security features were downgraded, OPPO didn’t sacrifice the performance. It has the same chipset as the F5 series – the MediaTek Helio P23. It has the new Mali-G71 MP2 graphics for better gaming performance. Memory and storage configuration is also fine at 3GB and 32GB.

  1. Lenovo P2

Lenovo P2 quickly drew high acclaim since it has the best battery life of any Smartphones we’ve tested so far. It can last for almost 30 hours on a single charge, which is quite noteworthy. The Lenovo P2 is the budget Smartphones to beat if we are talking about longevity.

Although it is a bit chunkier than most budget Smartphones, it is a small price to pay for the longest lasting Smartphones in the market. There are also quite a few amazing features offered by Lenovo P2 – Lenovo P2’s display, performance, and overall build quality are all first-rate. In fact, it’s actually giving the other mid-priced handsets a run for their money.

  1. Samsung Galaxy J5

Samsung has always performed far better than any of its competition and has a great track record of pumping out fantastic budget Smartphones. For the past few years, it is Samsung’s J-series line up that has mostly drawn the headlines, and the Galaxy J5 is no exception. Not only does it have monstrous battery life, but its super AMOLED display (despite being the only 720p) is a true beauty. As a matter of fact, its colors are so vibrant that it puts other LCD displays to shame.

Camera performance has also had a notable upgrade, too. In fact, it’s even better than the sensors on the previous Moto G5, if I would say so myself.   Together with its eye-catching display, you could definitely snap some Instagram-worthy photos.

  1. Huawei Nova 2 Lite

Huawei never fails to offer complete packages with prices below $200. And as proof, Huawei offers Nova 2 Lite, which comes equipped with dual main cameras, a fast fingerprint sensor, and some of the thinnest bezels among the budget Smartphones offered in the market today. Its pricier counterpart Nova 2i may have more features, but this is where Huawei shows their true value and where they shine.

Each and every smartphone showcases their unique and amazing features. And after sharing all these features and reasons to buy these budget Smartphones, I do hope that you have an idea which of these Smartphones best fits your needs.
